Crochet Drawstring Pouch with a Ruffled Top

A small lined-look drawstring pouch worked flat in half double crochet, then seamed and finished with an eyelet round, a full coral ruffle, and a beaded drawstring. Good for jewelry, small gifts, or keeping loose bits together in a bag.

Materials

Worsted weight yarn (size 4) — shown in Loops & Threads Soft Classic:
- Taupe — body, eyelet round, sc round, and drawstring
- Soft Coral — ruffle and flower petals
- Off white — flower center
One skein of each goes a long way — you'll have plenty left for more pouches.
5 mm (H) crochet hook
Yarn needle for seaming, sewing on the flower, and weaving in ends
2 beads — one for each end of the drawstring, with holes large enough to pass worsted weight yarn
Scissors, and tape if you make the twisted cord
Super glue — a very small dab locks each bead in place

Gauge & finished size

Gauge: 24 hdc = 4 inches · 14 rows = 4 inches. Easiest check: work the body rectangle and measure it flat — it should come to about 6 inches wide by 5 inches tall.

Work the yarn firmly — this pouch is meant to be dense, tighter than many people crochet by default. If your rectangle runs wider than 6 inches, go down a hook size, since loose stitches let small items work their way through.

Finished size: ~6" × 2.5"

Pattern

Body — worked flat in taupe

Row 1: Ch 37. HDC in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. 36 hdc Ch 1, turn.

Rows 2–18: HDC in each st across. 36 hdc Ch 1, turn.

After row 18, fasten off taupe.

Tip: The turning ch-1 does not count as a stitch. You should have a rectangle 36 stitches wide and 18 rows tall.

Assembly

Fold the rectangle in half, right sides together, so the fold sits at the bottom of the pouch.

Slip stitch up each side to seam them closed, leaving the top open. Turn right side out.

Box the corners: flatten each bottom corner so the side seam lines up with the bottom fold, and seam straight across the triangle about 1 to 1.5 inches deep. Tuck the tails inside.

Eyelet round — taupe

Join taupe at the top opening, working through both layers around. Rnd 1: DC in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st; rep around. Sl st to first dc to join. 36 dc, 36 ch-1 sps

Tip: The opening is 72 stitches around — 36 across the front and 36 across the back — so this round gives you 36 eyelets.

Single crochet round — taupe

Rnd 2: SC in each st and each ch-1 sp around. Sl st to join. 72 sc Fasten off taupe.

Ruffle — coral

Join soft coral to any stitch. Rnd 3: 3 DC in each sc around. Sl st to join. 216 dc Fasten off coral.

Tip: Tripling into every stitch is what makes this ruffle full rather than gently wavy. It uses a surprising amount of coral — wind off more than you think you need.

Drawstring — taupe · pick either method

Option A — crocheted chain. Cut about 50 to 55 inches of taupe. Chain until the cord measures 18 to 20 inches — roughly 80 to 90 chains depending on your tension. Fasten off, leaving long tails.

Option B — twisted cord. Cut 4 strands of taupe about 40 inches each. Knot them together at one end, tape that end to a table, and twist the strands tightly in one direction until the cord starts to kink. Hold the middle, fold in half, and let go — it will twist back on itself into a neat cord. Knot the open end.

To thread it: weave the cord in and out through the ch-1 eyelet spaces all the way around, so both ends come out at the same eyelet at the front.

To finish: slide one bead onto each end of the cord and knot below each bead. Add a very small dab of super glue at the knot to lock the bead in place, and let it dry before use. Trim the tails close. Pull the cord to gather the top and tie to close.

Tip: Keep the glue to a pinpoint — enough to hold the knot, not enough to soak into the yarn and stiffen the cord.

Flower appliqué

Center (off white): Make a magic ring. Work 6 SC into the ring, pull closed, sl st to join. 6 sc Fasten off.

Petals (soft coral): Join coral to any sc. In each sc around, work: (sl st, ch 3, 3 DC, ch 3, sl st). 6 petals Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Sew the flower to the center front of the pouch with a yarn needle. Weave in the ends behind it.

Tip: All five parts of each petal go into the same single stitch — that's what makes the petal stand up and cup slightly.

Finishing

Weave in all remaining ends with a yarn needle. Give the ruffle a gentle shake to settle it.
